Reader Q and A: Pit Stops along I-95

We frequently receive emails from readers asking about places to stop for family fun along certain routes or interstates. Often, these questions lead to great lists of pit stops which mesh with many travel destinations, and if the answer could benefit one family, I bet it could benefit many! Here’s one of our latest inquiries, with our answer (thank you to submitter Michael):

Reader Question: I visited your site for the first time after reading about it in Newsday on LI in NY. I am planning a trip from Albany NY to Orlando FL with my two special needs boys. Their ages are 6 1/2 and almost 14. There will be 3 adults (spouse, a nurse and I) and the 2 boys. I am looking for options off I-81 or I-95.

Pit Stops for Kids’ Answer: Michael, luckily, that route (especially I-95) is full of great pit stops! Here is a sampling of our favorites for a family with kids in several age categories and diverse needs:

The Petersen Urban Wildlife Refuge (originally submitted by Mother of All Trips): While passing through Delaware, stop at this natural refuge to let the kids run around and view some wildlife! You’ll be surprised by the amount of open area afforded so close to the city center! From I-95, you’ll want the Riverwalk exit.

The MIT Museum in Cambridge: This kid and adult-friendly museum makes our list due to its high quality exhibits and fun emphasis on robotic technology. On the last Sunday of every month, family activities are scheduled! Find more information and reviews at Trekaroo! Take the I-93 Exit into Boston from I-95.

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden: Further south in Virginia, stop and picnic and play in this extensive acreage of blooms and plant life. Your younger child especially will love the Children’s Garden, complete with treehouse! Take exit 80!

The Metropolitan Park Kids’ Campus: this park in Jacksonville makes the list for its diverse activities: picnic or play, or cool off in the water features! Head over to Two Kids and a Map for more great stops in the southeast! From I-95, take Exit 354A for US-1.

For many more stops along I-95, a great resource is the I-95 Exit Guide.
