Family holidays are an important part of your child’s upbringing and an integral part of family life. But it doesn’t make travelling with children easy. No matter what age your kids are the task of being responsible for and organising a group of people in new surroundings can be tricky! While no plans or preparations are foolproof (as parents well know!) there are a few ways to insure against mishaps when travelling with children, and make the holiday as enjoyable and memorable as possible.

Book family friendly accommodation. Particularly when travelling with younger children, make sure you book accommodation that is family friendly. Most hotels and resorts will stipulate whether they welcome young children and families or not, however it’s always good to double check. Good indicators are kids clubs, babysitting services and the option of children’s meals.

Choose the right destination. Traveling with children immediately rules out some destinations. You’ll need to adapt your holiday expectations to suit your family, even if your goal is to travel round the world or hike the Inca Trail. Choose destinations that are easily navigable and enjoyable with children. Research holidays that have activities, sites and attractions to suit both parental and infant tastes. Gold Coast Holidays, for example, provide the dual attraction of the beach and the theme park’s both children and parents can stay entertained!

Ask for bulkhead space on airplanes. One of the most difficult aspects of traveling with children (particularly with babies) is flying. To make the most of a hard and often uncomfortable situation, ask for the bulkhead space on your flights when you check in. This will give your children a little more room to move in. Also, pack activities and toys for the journey to keep children entertained and occupied for as long as possible.

Be prepared and pack things you might not be able to get at your destination. If there is any medication, food, or baby products that your child specifically needs, make sure you pack adequate supplies if you are unsure that you will be able to buy them at your destination. It is important, however, not to over pack! It can be worthwhile to investigate whether you can hire baby products such as strollers and car seats, rather than having to lug them around with you.

Traveling with children doesn’t have to be prohibitively hard. Planning a family holiday is all about thinking ahead, but also about being able to roll with the punches when things don’t necessarily go according to plan.

Where will you go on your next family holiday?

I believe traveling with kids is really not easy… I have travel with my kids many times and it was really a difficult time. Fun but difficult as I characterized it and ones we get home I was really exhausted. The best solution really for this is to choose the best destination of their interest.
