Best Ski Towns: Kellogg, ID

Silver Mountain gondolaLocated forty minutes past Coeur d’Alene on I-90 in the Idaho panhandle, the town of Kellogg, Idaho offers year-round outdoor and indoor recreation for a family vacation paradise. Hardly your typical ‘resort town’, Kellogg is not all slick boutiques and over-priced restaurants: it still thinks of itself as a mountain mining town with some really, really beautiful scenery and world-class skiing. It makes our list of Best Ski Towns for families due to its laid-back, friendly atmosphere, reasonable prices, perfect location (just close enough to a major city without being too close), and list of fun things to do as long as your arm.

Where to ski: Silver Mountain Resort offers two mountains of family-friendly skiing and boarding. With 1600 acres of terrain at your fingertips, you can easily spend a long weekend here and still not experience everything. A convenient gondola loads skiers right from the center of town, so there’s no need to cart equipment hither and yon, and for kids, there’s a great tubing center and ski school.

Where to stay: This is a no-brainer. Families will want to stay at Silver Mountain Resort’s Morning Star Lodge, where kids will go wild over their Silver Rapids indoor water park. Open year-round and only to resort guests, thSilver Rapidsis huge complex is housed under an enormous glass roof (you can actually get a sun tan!) and sports a surf simulator, lazy river, and water slides galore. Parents will be happy to hear that resort suites include a full kitchen and lots of space for kids to have their own room. Prices are reasonable, especially if you snag one of Silver Mountain’s many seasonal deals. Oh yeah: and kids ski free when staying at the Morning Star!

Where to eat: With a kitchen at your disposal, you may want to eat in. A grocery store is within easy distance of the Morning Star, and two fast food counter service restaurants are housed in the water park. Also on resort grounds are two full restaurants: a pub and a pizza place.

What to do when not on the slopes: You’ll be in the water park, of course, but also located within Kellogg are a mine museum and tour, hiking and biking trails in the summer, and a scenic gondola ride. Fishing and ATV riding is also offered seasonally. If you’re up for a day trip, head west to beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene for swimming in the summer!

How to get here: From Spokane, WA, take I-90 east to Exit 49 in Idaho.

Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Fantasy Cruise to the North Pole

Bet you never knew the North Pole is in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho! Celebrate this holiday season while in the Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho area with a family Fantasy Cruise to the North Pole, hosted by the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

These 40 minute cruises offer spectacular views of the many floating holiday light displays decorating lovely Lake Coeur d’Alene. The most memorable point in the journey, at least for the kids, lies across the lake, as the boat momentarily pauses by Santa’s workshop, where the big man himself awaits amid a magical snowfall (although in Coeur d’Alene, chances are certainly good for the real deal)! Best of all, in the spirit of the season, children are FREE!

When my family and I attended this cruise several years ago, cookies and hot cocoa were served to all the kids in the boat en route, and holiday music was played. The atmosphere was festive, and my three-year-old had a great time!

Note: Be sure to bundle up! Even a mild night can feel chilly on the lake, and while the boat has an interior section, kids will want to spend time on deck to view the light displays. Expect wait time on the dock as well.

Hours: Departures are scheduled at 5:30 pm, 6:30 pm, and 7:30 pm nightly November 27th-January 2nd. (A special fireworks cruise kicks the season off on Nov. 26th!)

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation

Purgatory Chasm State Park runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as 70 feet (just outside of Sutton, MA). It’s a great place to climb natural rock formations, and it’s completely free! There are trails as well. You just need your sneakers/bug spray/sunscreen/water bottle/snack! You can also have a picnic or use their BBQ pits (you’d have to provide the coals). There’s a pavilion for shading, ice cream truck (when we went) across the street, a playground, and more walking trails. I saw forest rangers too. The place gets lots of traffic when there’s great weather.

Extra Tip: This pit stop isn’t for the faint at heart; I saw 3-4-year-olds practically sprinting across the rocks better than I did!

A Pit Stop a Day (Day 3): Mobius Kids Museum

Day 3 found us spending the day among friends in Spokane, WA for the city’s annual Hoopfest basketball tournament. The kids and I temporarily escaped the crowds and heat at Mobius Kids, an expansive children’s museum right in the heart of downtown.

Mobius Kids is great for all ages with exhibits including a play city, a construction zone, a Globe theater, and a science lab. Having lived in Spokane several years ago, I can vouch for its growth: not long ago, this museum was a shadow of what it has become. Their “Enchanted Forest” section is perfect for the younger set, and my school-aged kids could have spent all day in the art studio.

If you live in the Northwest, be sure to check to see if any of your local children’s museum memberships qualify you for discounted admission. Ours did!

Extra Tip! If the weather is nice, go from the museum through the back entrance of River Park Square to Riverfront Park, a wonderful city greenbelt with duck ponds, a sky rail, outdoor ice skating (winter) and fun-zone carnival rides (summer).

Hormel SPAM Museum

If you’ve ever wondered what exactly is in that famous mystery meat, and you happen to find yourself driving along I-90 through Minnesota, you simply have to stop with your family at Hormel’s SPAM Museum in Austin.

Opened in 2002 and located directly across the street from Hormel’s main meat plant, the 16,500 square foot museum is housed in its own custom building and introduces visitors to every aspect of SPAM-making (which would certainly be educational!). “Spambassadors” roam the main floor, acting as guides (and serving SPAM on toothpicks), adding to the lighthearted fun.

TwinCitiesGal of The Vacation Gals recently reviewed the museum, saying, “My kids’ favorite section was the Spam Production where they could dress up like factory workers and “package” their own SPAM. Mine on the other hand was the Changing Market Place. It showed the difference between the shopping habits of the 1950’s and today. The comparison was astounding!” Read her full review!

Raptor Reef Indoor Water Park

Located in Hayden, Idaho as part of the Triple Play Family Fun Park, Raptor Reef is a massive indoor water park that’s easy to miss if you don’t realize it’s there. Stopping here makes for at least a half-day pit stop, but it’s well worth mentioning because of its availability to the public (unlike many other indoor water parks attached to hotels such as nearby Silver Mountain Resort, where you must be spending a night to enjoy the waterslides).

Says a member of the parent review site Trekaroo, “This is a great place for my 7,4,2,and 6 mo. old to play. It’s small enough that I feel comfortable letting my 7 year old go on the slides, and I can play with the other children in the kiddie area. The facility is clean, and I think the lifeguards do a good job of watching the pools.”

Raptor Reef houses a wave pool, multiple slides of varying lengths, hot tubs, and a climbing structure/aqua-play. Note that there are height restrictions for the bigger slides. Don’t forget to bring towels (or be charged $2) and swim diapers (required for all guests under age 2).

Fort Sherman Playground is the perfect place to stop along mountainous I-90 during a summer vacation. A beautiful city in any season, Coeur d’Alene is a is a summer recreation mecca with ample hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, and golf. Fort Sherman Playground at City Park offers a sprawling, 14,000 square foot wooden ‘fort’ play space on 17 acres near the lake’s edge. Sit in the shade while your kids play on the structure, then take a quick dip in the lake.

If you have more time, the Downtown Waterfront area offers a number of other options such as parasail rides high above the water, jet skis, kayaks, paddleboats and canoes for rent. The main office for rentals is located along the world’s longest floating boardwalk, located at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

If you find yourself driving I-90 from Seattle or Idaho’s ski and outdoor country, Spokane’s Riverfront Park is a beautifully appointed greenbelt worthy of a stop. Much more than a simple pit stop, the park spans both sides of the Spokane River and includes a pavilion originally built for the 1974 Expo, amusement rides, an ice skating rink, a Sky Ride gondola, an old fashioned carrousel, a giant red wagon slide, and plenty of grassy slopes, mature trees, and ducks to feed.

If the weather isn’t cooperating, try the IMAX theater (schedule listed under ‘Hours and Admission Prices below) or Mobius Kids Children’s Museum, located on the lower level within River Park Square, downtown Spokane’s premiere shopping center.

Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm

In South Barrington, Illinois, you’ll want to spend a fall Saturday or Sunday at Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm. Their fall festival, running from September 26th through October 31st, includes a haunted house and camel rides in addition to the standard pumpkin patch, corn maze, and petting zoo! And their farmer’s market and cafe offer some of the best local produce and homemade goods of the area. Says Kat (now of North Carolina) in a recent review at www.trekaroo.com, “In Illinois we always, ALWAYS, went to Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm in South Barrington. They are fabulous! There are other very good farms in the area, but Goebbert’s is the best – my kids just loved going there; every year about this time would beg to go!”

Hours and Admission Prices: There is no general admission, and parking is free. Tickets for individual attractions, such as wagon rides, pony rides, corn stalk maze and straw maze, vary from $4.00 per person to $7.00 per person, depending on whether you visit on weekends or weekdays.

Food Services: The Red Barn Cafe has a full menu of homemade treats, hot dogs, sandwiches, and hamburgers. Open seven days a week, 9am until 6pm during the harvest season. There’s also a fall harvest market, so you can take home goodies as well.

If you’re stopping for a quick bite to eat in North Bend, WA, you’ll quickly lament the lack of play lands at any of the fast food offerings. But a quick inquiry of the drive thru staff at Taco Time led us to E.J. Roberts Park. Only a few minutes into town (and it’s a lovely town!), EJ Roberts is a beautiful little respite from a long roadtrip. Located in a quiet residential area, the park is medium-sized, with a shaded play area, lots of grass to throw a ball around, and picnic tables, all with a stunning mountain backdrop.

Bathrooms: They were not very clean, but frankly, we were just glad they were there!

Food Services: Plenty of fast food nearby, including McDonald’s, Taco Time, and KFC. There’s also a Safeway within five minutes.

Directions: From I-90, take Bendigo Blvd to E. 4th, then turn left on Ballarat. Turn right on SE 114th, which turns into 6th. Park is on the right.
